Haydn’s Mass in D minor received its name when Hungarian Prince Nikolaus Esterházy told the composer that a courier had arrived with the news that Nelson had defeated the French. The image of the trumpeting courier captured Haydn’s imagination, and he added the obbligato trumpets to memorable effect. Maurice Duruflé’s gentle and meditative Requiem combines medieval melody and modern orchestration by giving the eloquent Gregorian chant prominence throughout.
