Krzesimir Debski Hussars’ Polonaise
Chopin – Piano Concerto No. 2
Szymanowski – Stabat Mater

In the slow movement of his Piano Concerto No. 2, Chopin embodied his first romantic crush about whom he wrote: “I already have my perfect one, whom I have served devotedly for a year now, of whom I dream, in whose memory the adagio of my concerto has been composed.” Together with Krzesimir Debski’s infectiously uplifting Hussars’ Polonaise and Szymanowski’s unabashedly nationalist Stabat Mater, Chopin’s musical love letter adds poignancy to the celebration of Poland’s 100 th anniversary of regaining independence.

There isn’t much about Chopin that Brian Ganz doesn’t know. His delight and wonder in this music seem to grow, apparently without bounds, as time goes on.” –The Washington Post

I.

Stała Matka bolejąca
koło krzyża łzy lejąca,
gdy na krzyżu wisiał Syn.
O, jak smutna, jak podcięta
była Matka Boża święta,
cicha w załamaniu rąk.
At the Cross, her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.
O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest
of the sole-begotten One.

II.

I któż, widząc tak cierpiącą,
łzą nie zaćmi się gorącą…
Za ludzkiego rodu winy
jak katowan był jedyny,
męki każdy niosła dział..
Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep…
For the sings of His own nation,
she saw Jesus wracked with torment,
all with scourges rent…

III.

O Matko, źródło wszechmiłości,
daj mi uczuć moc żałości,
niechaj z Tobą dźwignę ból.
O thou Mother! Fountain of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord.

IV.

Spraw, niech płaczę z Tobą razem,
krzyża zamknę się obrazem
aż po mój ostatni dech.
Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live

V.

Panno słodka, racz mozołem
niech me serce z Tobą społem
na golgocki idzie skłon
Virgin of all virgins blest!
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine.

VI.

Chrystus niech mi będzie grodem,
krzyż niech będzie mym przewodem.
Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
by Thy Cross my victory.
