DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE

COMPENSATION: $45,000 plus benefits

National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale, led by Maestro Piotr Gajewski, is a resident partner at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland (Washington, DC Metro Area), a $100 million, state-of-the-art concert hall inaugurated in February 2005. With a budget of $2 million, the National Philharmonic performs subscription and other concerts, several of which include the National Philharmonic Chorale. The National Philharmonic also presents 2nd grade MCPS educational concerts, chamber and solo recitals, and summer training programs for young musicians. The Development Associate (DA) is a full-time position. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, creative self-starter with fundraising experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The DA’s responsibilities will focus on the following areas:

Individual Giving

  • Oversee all aspects of the Annual Fund including solicitations, donor communications, member benefits, and event invitations
  • Oversee all donor recognition including programs, donor wall, and signage
  • Coordinate and write development stories for monthly ENews
  • Assist with Board giving and fundraising initiatives including tracking Board pledges, drafting letters for Board signature, distributing information for meetings, and assisting the Board with best fundraising practices

Special Events

  • Coordinate and oversee special events, both concert-related and occasional stand-alone fundraising events; responsibilities include operations and logistics
  • Oversee and implement other donor and sponsor benefits, and related concert activities including Encore Hours and sponsor tables

Development Information Services

  • Track and enter gifts and biographical information into Raisers Edge; manage Development files including donor, corporate, foundation; acknowledge all gifts in accordance with tax laws
  • Track foundation deadlines; coordinate with Grant Writer LOIs, proposals and reports
  • Generate weekly reports for staff and the Development Committee, and generate other reports for tax documentation and for the accountant, President and Board
  • Reconcile all contributions with financial department
  • Manage Development office volunteer
  • Oversee all data in Raisers Edge; assist with Blackbaud and Online Express issues

Development Committee

  • Assist with reports and meeting preparation with the Director of Development

Foundations

  • Award and deadline tracking; assist with materials and reports as needed

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in arts management, music, public relations, communications, or similar field
  • Minimum two years’ experience, ideally with annual campaigns, event management, and donor relations
  • Proven relationship-building and networking skills
  • Effective strategic communication, problem solving, and project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and collaboration
  • Proven track record of meeting deadlines and successfully juggling competing tasks
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with internal staff and external partners
  • Computer literacy, including Raiser’s Edge, Tessitura, or CRM program, Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, Google apps, social media, web maintenance, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Experience or demonstrated interest in the performing arts, particularly classical music

This position will require some evening and occasional weekend work. National Philharmonic staff members participate in Board meetings at the request of the President and assist at concerts (front of house and/or backstage duties) and events. The physical requirements for this position are representative of those that are essential to successfully performing the functions of this position. This includes the ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds and use equipment that is essential to performing the job.
